Art Meets Advocacy: Women in IP Hosts Brunch and Paint to Spotlight Creative Rights

Creativity and copyright took center stage at this weekend’s “Brunch and Paint” event hosted by Women in IP, where industry professionals blended art with advocacy to highlight the importance of intellectual property rights for artists and innovators.

Held in the heart of Manhattan’s arts district, the event brought together female lawyers, creators, and entrepreneurs for a morning of painting, networking, and spirited conversation on the intersection of law and creativity. Amidst canvases and mimosas, participants discussed pressing issues in IP law, including copyright ownership, licensing, and the unique challenges women face in protecting their work.

“Too often, creators—especially women—don’t realize the value of their intellectual property until it’s been compromised,” said keynote speaker Maya Chen, an IP attorney and founding member of Women in IP. “This event is about empowerment. It’s about making sure every brushstroke, lyric, or invention is protected.”

The informal setting encouraged open dialogue and mentorship, giving attendees a space to share their own experiences navigating creative careers. Live demonstrations from local artists illustrated how artistic expression and legal rights are deeply connected often in ways the public doesn’t see.

“It was refreshing to have a conversation about legal rights in a non-intimidating space,” said Ayesha Rivers, a freelance designer and first-time attendee. “Usually these topics are discussed in courtrooms or boardrooms. Here, we got to talk while painting sunflowers.”

Organizers say the event is part of a broader effort to make intellectual property more accessible and relatable, especially for underrepresented voices in the arts and sciences. Plans are already underway for follow-up sessions focused on patent protection and digital content rights.

“Art is powerful,” said Chen. “But power needs protection and that’s where IP comes in.”
