IOM Nigeria Launches Call for Young Filmmakers in 2025 Migration-Themed Short Film Contest

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) Nigeria has officially opened entries for its annual short film contest, inviting young creatives across the country to share compelling stories centered around migration, identity, and human resilience.

This year’s competition, themed “Changing the Narrative: Migration Through Our Eyes”, aims to empower emerging Nigerian filmmakers to challenge stereotypes and present balanced, human-centered portrayals of migration experiences.

According to IOM Nigeria, the contest seeks to amplify the voices of youths using storytelling as a tool to influence public perception and promote informed dialogue around migration. The initiative is part of the organization’s broader mission to encourage safe, orderly, and dignified migration while engaging communities through the power of art and media.

“We believe that storytelling especially through film is a powerful way to bridge gaps in understanding,” said Laurent de Boeck, Chief of Mission for IOM Nigeria. “This contest is not just about filmmaking; it’s about reclaiming the migration narrative from those who often tell it without understanding the lived experiences.”

Eligible participants must be Nigerian nationals aged 18–35. Submissions must be original short films under five minutes, focusing on themes such as migration journeys, family separation, reintegration, return, or the impact of migration on local communities.

Winning entries will receive cash prizes, production grants, and the opportunity to be screened at national and international forums, including IOM events and migration-related film festivals.

The deadline for submissions is July 31, 2025, and entries can be uploaded via the official IOM Nigeria website or partner platforms.

With migration remaining a central socio-political issue in Nigeria and beyond, the contest offers a platform for young filmmakers to challenge myths, celebrate resilience, and humanize the often-polarizing topic.
