Nollywood actress Sarah Martins has issued a public apology to Afrobeats star Davido following a social media backlash over her remarks about his Lagos-based restaurant, “Chéri.” In a recently circulated clip, Martins made comments perceived as critical of the restaurant, which sparked swift reactions from fans and the online community.
In a now-deleted Instagram story, Martins clarified her stance and expressed regret for any offense caused, stating that her remarks were taken out of context and were heavily influenced by popular food critic Opeyemi Famakin, who had joined her during the restaurant visit.
“I sincerely apologize to Davido and his team. It was never my intention to disrespect his business or effort,” Martins said. “The comments I made were based on the opinions shared by Opeyemi Famakin, who is a seasoned food critic. I allowed myself to be swayed without properly assessing the situation.”
The original clip, which surfaced earlier this week, showed Martins expressing dissatisfaction with certain menu items, prompting speculation and commentary online. While some defended her right to critique her dining experience, others accused her of unfairly targeting the musician’s venture.
Opeyemi Famakin, known for his candid food reviews, has yet to officially respond to Martins’ claims or the growing controversy.
Davido, who opened the high-end restaurant in 2024, has not commented publicly on the issue. However, sources close to the singer suggest he is focused on his music and business ventures, choosing not to engage in online drama.
Martins concluded her statement with a plea for understanding: “I support Nigerian businesses and want nothing but success for all of us. I hope we can move past this and continue to uplift each other.”
